Can We Have Sex During Navratri? What the Vrat Asks
This article is for information and is not medical advice.
There is no single rule. Navratri fasting, the vrat, traditionally includes brahmacharya, so people keeping the fast abstain for the nine days, and many couples treat kissing the same way. People who are not fasting are not bound by the vrat. What your family does depends on region and household, and the choice is yours as a couple.

Navratri me sambhog karna chahiye ya nahi? Agar aap vrat rakh rahe hain, toh parampara ke hisaab se nau din brahmacharya rakha jaata hai. Agar vrat nahi hai, toh koi rok nahi. Yeh faisla aap dono ka hai.
What does the Navratri vrat actually ask of you?
A vrat is a vow you take on yourself. The Sanskrit term covers observances kept "either as an independent private ritual" or as part of a festival, and the classic list runs well past food: fasting, sleeping on the ground, skipping sleep, meditation, reading, giving to charity (Wikipedia, Vrata). Navratri itself is nine nights, held four times a year.
Where does abstinence come in? Drik Panchang, the panchang publisher most Indian households actually check, tells devotees to fast, meditate and worship, and to maintain "celibacy and physical purification" through the nine days (Drik Panchang, about Navratri). That is the clearest statement of the custom you will find in a source anyone can open. Notice what it is not: it is guidance to the observer, not a scriptural ban, and it sits alongside the other things the vrat asks, like leaving out onion, garlic and grain.
Does the custom apply if we are not fasting?
By the plain logic of a vrat, no: the vow belongs to the person who took it. That is also the reading that matches how most households behave, where one person keeps nine days of fruit and sabudana and everyone else eats normally.
There is a second reading, and it is worth knowing before an argument starts at home. Religious commentary in the Indian press holds that "physical relations are not appropriate during any fast or festival" and that "if one partner is fasting, engaging in physical relations is considered equivalent to breaking the fast" (Webdunia, 29 Sep 2025). No scripture naming Navratri and sex turns up behind that line, so treat it as commentary, widely held and sincerely meant.
| Your situation | What the custom says | Where that comes from |
|---|---|---|
| Both of you are fasting | Celibacy through all nine days, as part of the vrat | Drik Panchang |
| One fasts, the other does not | The vrat binds the person keeping it. One strand of commentary says intimacy breaks that person's fast anyway | Webdunia |
| Neither of you is fasting | No vow, no rule. Households may still keep things quiet on puja days | Household custom, no textual source |
| Kissing and cuddling | The lifestyle press extends abstinence to kissing and other closeness; plenty of families do not | Boldsky |
| Gupt Navratri, in Magha and Ashadha | Same vrat, kept quietly and by fewer people | Wikipedia, Drik Panchang |
| Durga Puja in Bengal | Community-centred days built around pandals, not household fasting rules | Wikipedia |
| Garba nights in Gujarat | Nine late nights out. The fast and the dance floor are two separate conversations | Wikipedia |
Can we kiss or cuddle during the fast?
Most people asking this want permission for the small stuff, and the custom does not draw a neat line. Drik Panchang's wording, "celibacy and physical purification", is about the observer's own conduct and says nothing about a goodnight kiss. The lifestyle press goes further: one widely read Navratri rules piece advises couples to abstain "as a sign of respect towards the goddess", listing "refraining from sexual activity, kissing, and other forms of physical closeness" (Boldsky, 09 Apr 2024).
Between those two is where most couples actually live. Some keep the nine days completely apart, some keep affection and drop sex, some change nothing. None of those is the wrong answer, and nobody is checking. What matters more is that the person fasting gets to set their own line, and that neither of you decides it for the other. Neither custom nor marriage overrides a no.
Is it the same for Chaitra, Sharad and Gupt Navratri?
Yes, the vrat is the same; what changes is how many people keep it. Navratri comes four times a year: Chaitra around March and April, Ashadha and Magha as the two Gupt or "secret" Navratris, and Sharada in September or October, which is far and away the most celebrated (Wikipedia, Navaratri).
For 2026, Drik Panchang's Ashwin Shardiya calendar puts Ghatasthapana on Sunday 11 October, Maha Navami on Monday 19 October, and Vijayadashami with Navratri Parana on Tuesday 20 October (Drik Panchang, Shardiya Navratri calendar). Timings shift by city, so check your own panchang. The Gupt Navratris draw far smaller numbers, which is why a question like "gupt navratri me sambhog karna chahiye" usually comes from someone who has only just started keeping the vrat.
What do families in Gujarat, Bengal and the South actually do?
Practice is regional before it is anything else. In Gujarat the nine nights are arti followed by garba, and the whole household is out until two in the morning. In Bengal, Assam, Odisha and Tripura the same lunar days are Durga Puja, built around pandals and visiting rather than a household fast (Wikipedia, Navaratri).
So the honest answer to "what do families do" is that they do different things, and your in-laws' version is not the national rule. One household abstains for nine days and treats the question as settled. The next keeps a fast on the first and last day only. A third has a mother-in-law who fasts and a couple who do not. If this is the first Navratri you are navigating together, our guide to intimacy after an arranged marriage and the modern suhag raat guide cover the same muscle: deciding together instead of inheriting.
Is the Navratri condom sales story true?
Every October, headlines report a condom-buying spike around garba nights. The numbers in them are real quotes from real chemists, and they are also all anecdote. A 2025 look at the claim collected them in one place: the State Chemists' Association saying sales rose "by approximately 35 percent during Navratri", a 2023 report of 30 to 40 percent, an Apollo Pharmacy outlet in Ahmedabad citing 15 to 20 percent in 2022.
The same piece put the category numbers next to the anecdotes. Ajay Rawal of Emcube Ethicals: "the commercial condom market is 1.2 billion, which is evenly distributed across the months", and "this is hype created by marketers". Chandramouli Nilekantan of TRA: "There is no such thing as a condom season" (Storyboard18, 07 Oct 2025). The viral "18-fold increase" figure has no source at all. Worth holding on to if the story is being used to shame young people, or to imply that everybody else is doing it.
How do couples handle it when only one partner fasts?
The version that works is the one agreed out loud, before day one, rather than negotiated at eleven at night on day three. The person fasting says what they are keeping and for how long. The other person says what they would miss. Nine days is short, and most of the friction here is about feeling judged rather than about sex.
It also helps to have something to do with the evenings that is neither sex nor scrolling. The MyMuse Couples Quiz Game is 200 prompt cards across four categories, all of them PG-13 by design, which is why it survives a fasting week when other decks would not. Talking is also the part that outlasts the festival: how to talk about sex with your partner is the longer version of this section.
Key takeaways
- The vrat asks brahmacharya of the person keeping it. It is a personal vow, not a rule for the whole house.
- A partner who is not fasting is not bound by it, though religious commentary in the press argues otherwise.
- Practice is regional: garba nights in Gujarat, community Durga Puja in Bengal, quieter home pujas elsewhere.
- The condom-sales headlines rest on chemist anecdotes. Category data says there is no condom season.
Frequently asked questions
नवरात्रि में पति पत्नी को संबंध बनाना चाहिए या नहीं?
Agar aap vrat rakh rahe hain, the Navratri custom asks brahmacharya for all nine days, so couples who are both fasting usually abstain. If neither of you is keeping the vrat, no rule binds you. Where one fasts and one does not, the vow belongs to the person who took it, and the two of you decide the rest.
Can we have sex during Navratri if we are not fasting?
Yes. The Navratri vrat is a vow kept by the person fasting, so a couple who are not observing it are not bound by its celibacy clause. Some families still prefer quiet on the main puja days, which is a household preference rather than a rule from the custom itself.
Is masturbation allowed during a Navratri fast?
The Navratri vrat asks "celibacy and physical purification" of the person fasting, which observers generally read as including masturbation. No scripture we could open names it, there is no penance attached, and a slip does not void the nine days. Guilt is not part of the vrat.
Does touching a partner who is on her period break a Navratri fast?
Nothing in the Navratri vrat as the panchang sites describe it says so. Menstruation rules in Indian homes are a separate custom, kept strictly in some families and not at all in others. Our guide to intimacy during menstruation covers the non-festival version of the question.
MyMuse is an Indian sexual-wellness brand selling personal massagers, lubricants and intimacy products on mymuse.in and quick-commerce apps. We have no stake in what any couple does during the nine days.
