STI Testing in India: Free Options, Prices, Window Periods
This article is for information and is not medical advice.
In India you can get an HIV test free at any government ICTC (walk in, no referral, confidential) and STI care free at a Suraksha Clinic. Private labs sell STI panels for about ₹2,000 to ₹4,000; Dr Lal PathLabs' STD Panel was ₹2,960 on 04 Oct 2026. A 4th-generation HIV test is reliable 18 to 45 days after exposure.

People searching this usually want an address, not a lecture. One thing first: "I feel fine" is not a test. The WHO says most chlamydia and gonorrhoea infections have no symptoms (WHO, STI fact sheet, 10 Sep 2025). It also estimates more than 1 million curable STIs acquired every day among people aged 15 to 49, and 374 million new infections in 2020. NACO's India figure is "about 30-35 million episodes of STI/RTI every year" (PMC4857687). STIs are also called STDs.
Where can I get an STI test in India for free?
Walk into an ICTC. NACO runs these Integrated Counselling and Testing Centres across India, inside government and municipal hospitals. The Mumbai Districts AIDS Control Society puts it plainly: "HIV testing services are available free of cost" and "OPD paper is not required for walk-in-clients". Counselling comes before and after the test, and the same page lists 1097 as the HIV helpline (MDACS, HIV Testing Services). To find your nearest centre, ask at the hospital or call that number.
For symptoms rather than an HIV test, go to a Suraksha Clinic. These are NACO's designated STI/RTI clinics, set up in district hospitals and medical colleges, with free STI/RTI services. They cover counselling and testing for HIV, herpes, gonorrhoea, syphilis and chlamydia (Suraksha Clinic, Wikipedia). The Humsafar Trust, India's oldest queer-health organisation, offers free HIV treatment and counselling in Mumbai, Delhi, Guwahati and Nagpur (Humsafar Trust).
What does an STI test cost at a private lab, and what is in the panel?
About ₹2,000 to ₹4,000 for a bundled panel, as of October 2026. Checked line by line: Dr Lal PathLabs' STD Panel in Delhi was ₹2,960 on 04 Oct 2026 (list price ₹3,620). It runs 12 parameters on a blood sample, including syphilis, HIV antibody and herpes antibody lines. Home collection is offered, a sample by 9 am gets a next-day report, and a signed HIV consent form (Forms 10 and 10A) is mandatory (Dr Lal PathLabs, STD Panel).
Read the parameter list before you pay. The easy-to-book panels are mostly blood antibody tests. The Dr Lal chlamydia line is "Chlamydia Trachomatis IgG", an antibody test, not NAAT, the urine or swab test for the bacteria's DNA or RNA. If chlamydia or gonorrhoea is the worry, ask for NAAT by name and expect a separate charge.
Which tests should I ask for?
HIV for everyone at least once; chlamydia and gonorrhoea every year if you are a sexually active woman under 25 or have new partners; syphilis plus hepatitis B and C early in pregnancy. That is the CDC's screening list (CDC, Getting Tested for STIs). The table prints only sourced cells; unsourced ones say "ask the lab".
| Test | Sample | Window period (CDC) | Free option | Private example, 04 Oct 2026 | How often (CDC) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HIV antigen/antibody lab test (4th generation) | Blood from a vein | 18 to 45 days | ICTC, free (MDACS) | Ask the lab | Everyone 13 to 64 once; more often with risk factors |
| HIV rapid antigen/antibody | Finger-prick | 18 to 90 days | ICTC, free | Ask the lab | As above |
| HIV antibody test | Blood or oral fluid | 23 to 90 days | ICTC, free | "HIV 1 & 2 Antibodies, Screening Test" in the Dr Lal STD Panel, ₹2,960 | As above |
| HIV NAT | Blood from a vein | 10 to 33 days | Not routine | Ask the lab | Only when a doctor advises |
| Syphilis (RPR or VDRL, TPHA confirm) | Blood | Ask the lab | Suraksha Clinic (NACO) | RPR and TPHA in the Dr Lal panel | Early in pregnancy; men who have sex with men yearly |
| Chlamydia and gonorrhoea (NAAT) | Urine or swab | Ask the lab | Suraksha Clinic (NACO) | Priced separately (the Dr Lal panel is IgG only) | Women under 25 yearly; 25 and over with new partners yearly; again 3 months after treatment |
| Hepatitis B (HBsAg) and C (anti-HCV) | Blood | Ask the lab | Ask at the clinic | Ask the lab | Early in pregnancy |
| Herpes (HSV 1 and 2 IgG, IgM) | Blood | Ask the lab | Not routine | In the Dr Lal panel | Not routinely recommended; ask a doctor |
| HPV | Cervical sample | Not applicable | Ask at the clinic | Ask the lab | A vaccine exists (WHO) |
How soon after exposure can a test detect HIV?
It depends on the test, and the CDC's numbers beat the "four weeks is conclusive" line you will see on Quora. Lab antigen/antibody test on blood from a vein: 18 to 45 days after exposure. Rapid finger-prick version: 18 to 90 days. Antibody-only tests, including oral-fluid kits: 23 to 90 days. Nucleic acid test (NAT): 10 to 33 days (CDC, Getting Tested for HIV). The window closes at the top of each range; a negative result before then is not final, so retest once it has passed.
How often should I get tested?
The CDC's list is the clearest one we found (CDC, STIs; CDC, HIV):
- Everyone aged 13 to 64: an HIV test at least once; yearly, or every 3 to 6 months, with risk factors.
- Sexually active women under 25: gonorrhoea and chlamydia every year.
- Women 25 and older with a new partner or more than one: gonorrhoea and chlamydia every year.
- Men who have sex with men: at least once a year; every 3 to 6 months with multiple or anonymous partners.
- Pregnant: syphilis, HIV, hepatitis B and hepatitis C early in the pregnancy.
- After treatment for chlamydia or gonorrhoea: test again 3 months later.
India's free annual option is the ICTC visit. A new partner, a wedding on the calendar or a condom that broke are the usual reasons to go sooner. Between tests, it is condoms plus the right lube. The NHS rates condoms 98% effective as contraception when used correctly every time, and says water-based or silicone-based lube with latex, never oil-based (NHS, Condoms). See the condom size guide and the lubricant guide.
Can I get tested without my family knowing?
Yes. At an ICTC you walk in without an OPD paper, and "complete confidentiality is maintained while sharing the test result" (MDACS). At a private lab you book online, give the sample at home or at a collection centre, sign the HIV consent form yourself, and get the report the next day (Dr Lal PathLabs). Queer and trans readers who would rather skip the government counter have Humsafar's centres (Humsafar Trust).
The stigma is real. ICTC counsellors have heard every version of your story; the test is the boring part. Take a friend or your partner if that helps; the person getting tested is the one doing the responsible thing.
What happens if a result is positive?
You are told in post-test counselling (MDACS). Four of the common STIs, chlamydia, gonorrhoea, syphilis and trichomoniasis, are curable, and vaccines exist for hepatitis B and HPV (WHO). After treatment for chlamydia or gonorrhoea, the CDC advises testing again 3 months later (CDC). HIV treatment and counselling are free at the Humsafar Trust's centres (Humsafar Trust). Tell recent partners so they can test; that is the one step no clinic can take for you.
Key Takeaways
- HIV testing is free at any government ICTC: walk in, no OPD paper, confidential (MDACS). 1097 is the HIV helpline.
- Free STI care at Suraksha Clinics (NACO); free HIV treatment and counselling at the Humsafar Trust.

- Everyone 13 to 64: an HIV test at least once; sexually active women under 25: chlamydia and gonorrhoea yearly (CDC).
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get an STI test in India without my parents or spouse knowing?
Yes. Government ICTCs take walk-in clients without an OPD paper and keep the result confidential, per MDACS. Private chains such as Dr Lal PathLabs offer home collection, an HIV consent form you sign yourself, and a next-day report.
How much does an STD test cost in India?
An HIV test is free at any government ICTC, and STI care is free at a Suraksha Clinic. Private STI panels in India cost about ₹2,000 to ₹4,000; Dr Lal PathLabs' STD Panel was ₹2,960 in Delhi on 04 Oct 2026. NAAT is priced separately.
How long after exposure does an HIV test work?
Per the CDC, a lab antigen/antibody HIV test works 18 to 45 days after exposure. A rapid finger-prick test needs 18 to 90 days, an antibody test 23 to 90 days, and a nucleic acid test 10 to 33 days. A negative result before the window has passed is not final.
Do I need a doctor's referral for an STI test in India?
No. Government ICTCs do not require an OPD paper for walk-in clients, per MDACS. Private labs such as Dr Lal PathLabs let you book an STI panel online; the HIV part needs a consent form (Forms 10 and 10A) that you sign.
